Castle complex and defensive wall in Friesach
The mighty castle complex on the western slope can be seen from afar. Nearby, the high city walls and the fortified moat dominate. This fortification is a real rarity. There is no other moat in the whole of Central Europe that dates back to the Middle Ages and is still filled with water today. With a length of 820 meters, it surrounds the old town to the north, east and finally the south. Once you have crossed the moat and walked through the old walls, you will discover a variety of historic buildings at every turn, such as monumental palaces, town houses and warehouses, the central main square with its Renaissance fountain, many churches, monasteries and romantic, dreamy alleyways.
Living room nature
A little hidden behind the town hall, you will find an exciting museum in the former granary. The “Living Room Nature” takes visitors into the world of native wild animals.
Petersberg Castle & Craigher chocolate factory
Even 19th century Friesach travel guides recommended a walk to the Petersberg castle complex, as it is home to one of the town’s landmarks, the 28-metre-high chapel tower. In front of the small castle church of St. Peter, there is a fabulous view of the town and the surrounding countryside. After a tour of discovery through the town, a stop at the traditional Cafe Craigher with its chocolate museum right on the main square is a sweet and delicious must.
Hirt Brewery & Porsche Museum
In the immediate vicinity of Friesach, beer has been brewed with real passion in Hirt since 1270. In St. Salvator, the countless horsepower of the fine automobiles from the Gerhard Porsche collection impress visitors to the two museums in the town.
