Park your car and set off on a hike. Or stop off right away. The Steinerhütte on the Saualm is worth a visit before and after the tour. Not least because of the traditional Carinthian cuisine.
More alpine hut flair is not possible. High above Eberstein, surrounded by beautiful nature and a breathtaking panorama, stands the rustic Steinerhütte at the end of a well-kept mountain road. The Süßenbacher family spoil their guests with Carinthian delicacies in summer and winter.
The great expanse high above.
Starting from the parking lot directly in front of the Steinerhütte, there are hiking trails for all tastes and fitness levels. The entire Saualm ridge can be hiked to the south – towards Griffen and Diex – as well as far to the north towards Mühlen and Styria. If you are planning a longer tour, you can spend the night in one of the many huts on the Saualm. The mountain range between the Lavanttal and Görtschitztal valleys is also ideal for touring, snowshoeing, skiing and tobogganing in winter.
Old hut with history.
The Steinerhütte has an eventful history. Many years ago it was a dairyman’s hut, it was later converted into a refuge and in the 1930s it was expanded into a large alpine hotel. However, the hotel was burnt down during the turmoil of the Second World War. The old walls of the laundry room, on which the hut was later built, can still be admired today. For those interested in history, there is a collection of pictures and brochures that clearly document the history of the Steinerhütte.
