Hut hike to the large Sauofen with the Steinerhütte

This is the declared classic of all Saualm tours. And for locals from the Carinthian central region, it is one of the most obvious alpine experiences. Especially in autumn, when the curves of the Saualpe are reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, Große Sauofen is the ideal destination for a sunset hike thanks to its easy accessibility and boundless panorama. However, there are two hurdles to overcome before you can set off. They are called: Druckerhütte and Steinerhütte.

Anyone who has ever ordered Carinthian meat noodles from host Heinz Felfernig at the Alpengasthof Druckerhütte will automatically have a reflex to turn off in the direction of the hut as soon as they drive along the mountain road that leads from Eberstein to the Saualm. And even away from the culinary temptations, the atmosphere in the Druckerhütte with its large garden and children’s playground is so inviting that you might accidentally forget all about hiking.

Stop off at the Steinerhütte

It’s no different with the Steinerhütte, which is located a few hundred meters further up – and meanly right next to the parking lot. It is smaller than the Druckerhütte and attracts many lovers of delicious Carinthian delicacies to the Saulam.

Soul food Saualm

We recommend: For the hut hike, first of all follow hiking trail no. 342 from the Steinerhütte parking lot via the ski slope and then continue along the well-signposted trail via Weiden and along the Saualm ridge to the Großer Sauofen. This is rest for the eyes, a bit of a challenge for the legs, but also pure soul food, because on a clear day the view stretches from the Karawanken across the Julian Alps to the Hohe Tauern. This half-day hike also makes you really hungry. If you still have time and reserves, you can take three Saualm peaks with you on a circular route.

And after the descent, you have to choose between the Steiner and Drucker huts. Or hike from hut to hut. Or choose one this time and save the other for the next Sauofentour. Just as you like…
