What is it like to sleep in a “Troadkastn”? And what is it anyway? For people who are not quite so familiar with the dialect, the word can also be translated as “hut for storing grain”. Grain was and is colloquially known as a “troad”. But far beyond grain, the small defensive towers for food were often used to store all kinds of culinary treasures. In a way, the troadkastn can also be described as a peasant “treasure chest”. The Troadkästn often look like a miniature Legoland version of the classic Central Carinthian Ringhof and stand at a safe distance from the main building. The reason for this is easy to explain: There was often a considerable risk of fire at a farmhouse. To ensure that your “treasure chest” did not become a victim of the flames and that you at least still had food supplies in the event of an accident, it was worth keeping a safe distance between the alpine huts and the main building.
Balm for the eyes in the Central Carinthian landscape – spending the night in the Troadkastn
The main area of Carinthian granaries is the region around St. Veit and Feldkirchen. Traditionally, the troadkästn were often built on stilts or at least raised and well fortified in order to protect the valuable delicacies from moisture and all kinds of predators.
With the decline of grain cultivation in many regions, troadkästn lost their importance. Quite a few fell into disrepair as a result. The original function of many other troadkästn has changed fundamentally. In recent years, many of these gems of rural culture have been revitalized in harmony with nature and furnished with attention to detail.
Whether it’s a honeymoon, anniversary, birthday or simply a few relaxing days in the middle of the unique, gentle nature of Central Carinthia, these fortified little towers are a guarantee for comfort and well-being. Anyone who has ever slept in a “Troadkastn” will never forget the experience.
