Cycle into medieval Friesach by e-bike
Cycle by e-bike from St. Veit to the castle town of Friesach.
Discover the cultural tour by e-bike
From the beautiful main square of St. Veit an der Glan, with its numerous historic buildings, the Fuchspalast art hotel and the St. Veit Museum, the tour takes you by e-bike past Althofen to Friesach, the oldest town in Carinthia. In Hirt, just outside Friesach, you will find the Hirt private brewery with its brewery cellar. A guided tour of the brewery and a culinary refreshment stop are ideal here. The highlight of this “culture tour” is certainly the castle town of Friesach. The castle ruins on Petersberg can be seen from afar. Once you have arrived in Friesach, you should not miss the Friesach adventure castle. Here you can discover how a castle was built in the old days, without any aids. In the town center of Friesach, the Craigher chocolate and experience factory is not to be missed.
If you still have the energy and desire to continue cycling, you can continue the tour by e-bike to Dürnstein in Styria.
Tip for connoisseurs: You can experience true narrow-gauge romance when you travel the section of the route from Althofen to Pöckstein-Zwischenwässern on the historic Gurktal Museum Railway.
Halfway up the Saualpe
The very first section of the tour is a highlight: the forest trail from Eberstein to the “Grabenköhler” makes mountain bikers’ hearts skip a beat, not least because you have to cross the Dießeckerbach stream several times. Riding your bike through the middle of the shallow riverbed, you can hardly get more natural than this. At the end, a cool Kneipp basin awaits for a first break.
Continue along an elegant and romantic gravel path between meadow and forest up to Mirnig. The late Gothic church on a hill makes for an enchanting photo motif. You should always have a camera to hand for this tour halfway up the Görtschitztal valley! If you get thirsty or hungry, the Gutmann inn just below the church is the perfect place to stop.
Leisurely pedaling, lots to look at
With fresh energy and no major climbs, the tour continues towards Hochfeistritz. Your legs pedal along at a leisurely pace, while your eyes have plenty to look at. There are either fabulous views of the valley and the Carinthian mountains, or you can already see the lush greenery and clean farms on the opposite slope, after many trenches of the Saulam western slope are ridden on this tour. In Hochfeistritz itself, the Gasthof Leikam is a good place to stop for refreshments. The proud fortified church next door is worth a detour anyway!
On the last section towards Diex, Carinthia’s sunny town, you can take in the lush meadows and green forests once again. The roads, villages and settlements far down in the Görtschitztal are a charming frame for this unique landscape painting. Once you arrive in Diex, you can take a longer break in one of the numerous inns in the village and sunbathe before taking the long, fast descent to Brückl.
Final spurt on the Görtschitztal cycle path
The last section to Eberstein runs along the well-developed Görtschitztal cycle path. Fortunately, the fact that there is a decent climb at the very end to the panoramic village is insignificant. The battery of the e-bikes easily holds out and the turbo is switched on again at the end. Once you arrive at the start and finish point at Sereinig, there’s one last time to sprinkle on top: the uplifting view down into the beautiful Görtschitztal valley!
