Metnitz has an artistic and cultural-historical treasure to offer, the “Metnitz Dance of Death”, a fresco from the late Gothic period around 1500 and the “Metnitz Dance of Death Play”, which is only performed every 4 years. The next performance of the Dance of Death play is in 2022.
The Dance of Death Museum in the immediate vicinity of the church is home to the 500-year-old “ORIGINAL FRESCES” and an excellent documentation of other European Dance of Death depictions. In the Museum of Customs “Bei uns daham” you can experience ecclesiastical and secular customs throughout the year at first hand.
Or visit Grades Castle and experience the feeling of being the lord or lady of one of Carinthia’s most beautiful castles for yourself.
The churches in Metnitz, Grades, Oberhof, Feistritz, Lassnitz and Flattnitz offer wonderful insights. Another special feature is the Metnitz Rifle Guards with music in their historical uniforms, because tradition and customs are an integral part of life in the Metnitz Valley.
