The Laurenziweg in Brückl
For over 1,000 years, the little stone church of St. Lorenzen on Johannserberg has been enthroned high above Brückl. Even our pre-Christian ancestors recognized the energy of this location as a mystical place of power. It is the destination of the 3.5-kilometre “Laurenziweg” trail, which starts in the middle of the village, in front of the parish church of St. Johann in Brückl.
Roman stone on facade
Around the parish church there are references to the Roman period, which was so important for the entire Görtschitz Valley. The Roman stone, which adorns the façade of the rectory, is a preserved pediment of a Roman tomb showing the busts of two married couples. And at the Roman fountain in front of the church, a fountain trough made of Italian stone, there is a plaque commemorating the former trade between Celts and Romans in the region. Encouraged by these stone witnesses to Roman times, the short hike starts southwards along St. Johanner Straße and the Römerweg to the Kreuzweg.
Magnificent valley views
Uphill – along settlements and through peaceful, shady woodland – hikers are rewarded time and again with wonderful views of the valley for the meters of altitude covered. Up to the hill from where a wayside shrine is clearly visible. It shows the Laurenzi pilgrims the way across the meadow to the ancient stone chapel. It stands proudly here, the mother church of Carinthia, as a silent witness to times long past.
Here you can linger, let your gaze wander, let your thoughts wander after hiking. Until you return to the valley recharged with fresh energy.
