A breathtaking view in under two hours: A gentle hike from the Weißbergerhütte to the Gertrusk.
The old rule for pleasure hikers: the longer the journey to the starting point of the hike, the fewer meters in altitude you have to cover on foot. In this respect, this leisurely tour on the Saualm fits in well with the concept. It starts at the Weißbergerhütte, which is located at the end of a well-maintained mountain road from Wieting.
The hut is located at 1,608 meters above sea level – and as soon as you get out of the car, you feel on top of things, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the Görtschitztal valley below. From the Weißbergerhütte parking lot, head towards Gertrusk, one of the most rewarding peaks on the gentle Saualm ridge. It lies at 2,044 meters above sea level.
Look into the country.
The hike is described without any problems: It is best to always follow the lift route “auffi”. You walk across green pastures and through a coniferous forest passage until the lift supports end. From here, the Gertrusk peak is already clearly visible and after crossing a cow pasture, a large yellow signpost to the summit is already waiting. Within one and a half hours, the almost 400 meters in altitude are easy to master, even for less experienced hikers. The reward is a magnificent panoramic view that stretches far into Carinthia, the Hohe Tauern and Karawanken mountains, and to the rear into the Lavanttal valley and the Koralm. Here you can indulge in what the Carinthians have invented the perfect phrase for: “Ins Land eini schaun!”
After a successful descent (same route), you have really earned the delicious home cooking and the rustic atmosphere of the Weißbergerhütte. And if you take a seat on the large terrace, you can really take in the view once again.
Until the next tour.
