The hike leads across the still-mown meadows directly into the Hörfeld Moor, which is around 5 kilometers long. Incidentally, two thirds of it lies in Carinthia and one third in Styria, making it borderline in the truest sense of the word. The moor can be hiked through on narrow footbridges and our guide tells us about the formation of the moor, its flora and fauna, as well as the function and significance of this landscape. The rucksack is also well filled with all kinds of utensils, some of which can be used to conjure up amazing effects and explain the effects of the plants along the way. There are also small mirrors in the pack. Held to the bridge of our noses, they allow us to look into the canopy of leaves high above our heads.
We continue through gentle forests and only now do we realize that it is late morning and we are getting hungry. A hearty snack is just what you need at the highest point of the hike, with a magnificent view over the Hörfeld Moor. Then it’s time to set off again and head back to Mühlen. A day full of wonderful impressions lies behind us.
The connections between the fauna and flora of the moorland are what make the hike particularly memorable. Anyone who learns, for example, why a particular butterfly needs a particular flower knows why the conservation of species is so important. It should also be mentioned at this point that the Hörfeld Moor has a much higher status than just that of a nature reserve. It has also been designated as a European nature reserve since 2006.
